Once the home of the British newspaper industry, Fleet Street stretches from the shadows of St Paul’s Cathedral in the east to the edge of The Strand and the Law Courts in the west. This central London street is a short walk from Temple, Holborn and Blackfriars tube stations.
Even in olden times, the street was known for its taverns and that aspect has not changed since. The list of pubs here follows a logical procession from The Blackfriar just north of Blackfriars Bridge, north to the eastern end of Fleet Street and then along the street itself as far as the bunch of pubs in the backstreets opposite the Law Courts at the western end.
The Blackfriar, 174 Queen Victoria Street
Up to eight real ales are available from this ancient, wedge-shaped pub just to the north of Blackfriars Bridge. The pub is on the site of the Dominican monastery that stood from 1279 to 1539. The tiles and carvings around the bar alone make it worth a visit. And the ceiling in the backroom is breathtaking. This is now part of the Nicholson’s chain.
